Many professional carpenters have copied my tool box design, so I thought I'd make it generally available in our free woodworking plans series.
Detailed drawings showing: Side and End Elevation showing the dimensions; a cross section and a plan view of the compartments.
The plans have a List of Materials, showing a breakdown of materials needed for the tool box, as well as a list of the tools needed.
The Instructions include the sizes of pieces to cut and how to layout the tool box. This is a simple plan with instructions for the beginning woodworker.

The length of this tool box is dependent on the longest tool that you'll put into it, generally your handsaw or level. I've designed this for a 30" handsaw and 24" level. You can adjust this length to compensate for the length of your saw.
From a piece of 3/4" plywood, rip the two end pieces 8"x11" long and 8"x32".
The two sides of the tool box are from 3/8" or 1/2" plywood—6"x32"
Layout and cut the ends to match the drawing. Drill a hole in each end to hold the dowel or handle.
Assemble the bottom of the tool box to the ends with nails and glue, then nail on the sides to the bottom and ends.
For the saw and level compartments, rip your pieces to match the enlarged cross-section. Assemble this section as a unit and install it into the tool box. Screw or nail into this unit from the ends.
Cut the dowel to length and insert it into the holes in the ends. Nail from the top of the ends into the dowel to hold it in place.
There you go with a new carpenter tool box ready to fill up after Christmas.
This box can also be varied to make a screw-box caddy or to carry an assortment of nails, etc.
